Welcome to MITHRAS LASER

THINGS HAVE CHANGED FOR THE 24/25 ACADEMIC YEAR

Mithras Laser is now a bureau service.  The average turn around time for jobs is 4 days.

Always allow enough time for your files to be cut, we DO NOT offer a same day or rushed service.

The materials we stock have changed, check out our new range.  Some materials such as MDF have been discontinued (due to the smoke blocking our expensive filters really quickly and it leaving a sticky residue all over the inside of the machine).

Mithras Laser is the UOB in house laser cutting service, located in Mithras House.  We aim to offer a 3 working day turnaround laser cutting service calculated from when we receive payment for your job.  We endeavour to make Mithras Laser affordable only charging for materials, no cost is added to your jobs for cutting time.

Laser cutting is a really powerful model making tool when used appropriately, to add features and detail to your models.  It should not be the only tool used when creating a model.

For large jobs (2 sheets+ or highly detailed sheets) please contact us in advance.  We reserve the right to refuse jobs that will take a long time as they significantly reduce our ability to provide an efficient service to other students.

 Prepping Your Designs

1.  Sizing

The Mithras Laser bed size is 800mm x 450mm, this is the largest size of material we can cut.  The sheet sizes of our stocked materials vary, please see Mithras Laser Material & Price List for dimensions.

 2.  File Layout

Set up a template to the correct dimensions to layout your designs, layout all the items you would like cut with the correct cut options.

Remember that the sheet size varies for different materials.

Some materials are charged per 1/4 of a sheet.  Layout your design efficiently.

All materials sizes are listed on the Mithras Laser Material & Price List.

It is important that you don’t have duplicate lines on top of each other in your file, they will affect the finished result of your job.

 3.  Cut Options

There are three different cuts we can perform on the Mithras Lasers; 'Cut Through, 'Score Line' and 'Raster Engrave'. To show us what type of cut you require, use one of the following options for each element of your design.

Cut Through

This is a cut that goes all the way through the material. You must use the following settings in your design file:

• Stroke / line weight = 0.01mm or hairline
• Colour: RGB red (255, 0, 0)

Score Line

This is a cut line that just marks the surface of the material and does not go all the way through. We have a standard optimised depth that marks the surface. You must use the following settings in your design file:

• Stroke / line weight = 0.01mm or hairline
• Colour: RGB blue (0, 0, 255)

Raster engrave

This is when you require a filled area on the surface of the material to be engraved. You must use the following settings in your design file:

• Stroke / line weight = none
• Engraved areas should have black fill
• Colour: RGB black (0, 0, 0)

4.  Materials Range

We have a wide range of materials to choose from.  Please see the Mithras Laser Material & Price List.
